How to Fix JPG File Not Supported Error (Step-by-Step)
This guide walks you through every troubleshooting step to fix JPG not supported errors, from file verification to conversion.
Step 1: Verify the File is Actually a JPG
Windows: Right-click the file → Properties → check the Type shows "JPG Image" or "JPEG Image".
Mac: Right-click → Get Info → check Kind shows "JPEG Image".
If it shows something else (PNG, WebP, BMP), the file extension is wrong or the file was mislabeled.
Step 2: Try Opening in Multiple Programs
Download and try:
- Windows: Photos app, Paint, Windows Photo Viewer, VLC Media Player
- Mac: Preview (built-in), Image Viewer, GIMP
- Online: Free online image viewers or convert JPG to PNG as a test
If it opens in at least one program, the file is fine — the error is program-specific.
Step 3: Check File Size
Extremely small files (under 100 bytes) are corrupted. Look at the file size in Properties/Get Info. If it's suspiciously tiny, the file is broken beyond repair.
Step 4: Online Repair Tool
Use free online JPG repair services to attempt recovery. Upload your file and let the tool rebuild it. This works surprisingly often for corrupted files.
Step 5: Re-Save or Convert
Open the JPG in any image editor and re-save it:
- Open in Paint (Windows) or Preview (Mac)
- File → Save As
- Choose JPEG format
- Save with a new name
Or convert from a similar format: PNG to JPG or WebP to JPG.
Step 6: Browser Cache Issue
If the error happens in your browser:
- Clear browser cache (Ctrl+Shift+Delete or Cmd+Shift+Delete)
- Close and reopen browser
- Try the file again
Step 7: Upload to Website
If a website rejects your JPG:
- Check size limits (usually under 5MB)
- Check allowed formats (some sites only accept specific versions)
- Try re-saving/converting using our tool
- Contact website support with details
Last Resort: Rebuild from Scratch
If all else fails and you have the original source, re-export/convert from that source using a trusted tool. If you only have the broken JPG, recovery isn't possible.
