File Conversion Errors - Common Issues & Solutions
Troubleshooting guide for common file conversion problems. Learn why conversions fail and how to fix them.
Why does my file fail to convert?
Files fail to convert for several reasons: (1) Corrupted source file - the original file is damaged or incomplete, (2) Unsupported format - the converter doesn't recognize the input format, (3) Browser limitations - very large files may exceed your browser's memory, (4) Invalid file extension - the file is named incorrectly, such as a PNG renamed as JPG. Try opening the file in another program first to verify it is readable.
What's the file size limit for conversion?
Our online converter can handle files up to several hundred MB depending on your browser and device RAM. If you have larger files, download a desktop conversion tool like FFmpeg, GIMP, or VLC. File size limits exist because conversion happens in your browser's memory - larger files require more RAM than your device may have available.
My file converted but looks wrong or corrupted
If the converted file appears corrupted or damaged: (1) Check the source file - make sure the original file is valid by opening it in another program, (2) Try reconverting - sometimes a retry succeeds, (3) Use a different converter - different tools have different compatibility levels, (4) Check output settings - if you adjusted quality or compression settings, try default settings instead. If the converted file is corrupted beyond use, the source file was likely already damaged.
The conversion is taking too long
Conversion speed depends on file size, your device, and the file type. Most files convert in seconds to minutes. If it's taking much longer: (1) Close other browser tabs, (2) Refresh and retry, (3) Test with a smaller file first, (4) Use desktop software for very large files. Mobile conversions also tend to be slower due to device limitations.
My browser says the file is not supported
This error means your browser cannot read the file format. Solutions: (1) Use a different browser - Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all support different formats, (2) Update your browser, (3) Check the file extension, (4) Use desktop software like GIMP, ImageMagick, or FFmpeg for more exotic formats.
I can't find my converted file
After conversion, your file should download automatically. If not: (1) Check your Downloads folder, (2) Check browser download settings, (3) Try again in a different browser, (4) Allow downloads if your browser blocks them. The converted file is downloaded to your device - nothing is stored remotely.
The quality looks worse after conversion
Quality loss can happen when converting to lossy formats such as JPG or MP3, when compression settings are too aggressive, or when the target format is not a good fit for the content. For maximum quality, convert to lossless formats such as PNG, TIFF, or FLAC.
How do I batch convert multiple files?
You can upload multiple files at once and convert them together. Results are typically downloaded as a ZIP file. For very large batches, desktop tools like FFmpeg, ImageMagick, or VLC are much faster and easier to automate.
Is my file data safe when I convert?
Yes. Our converter runs entirely in your browser - files are not uploaded to our servers. Conversion uses your device's processing power, and the result is downloaded directly to your machine.
What if the converted file still doesn't work?
If the converted file does not open in the target app: (1) Check app compatibility, (2) Verify the file extension, (3) Try another tool, (4) Confirm the source file is healthy, (5) Test with a sample file from another source in the same format to isolate whether the issue is the app or the file.
