Image Conversion Errors & How to Fix Them

Solutions for common image format conversion problems. Fix transparency issues, color problems, and format compatibility errors.

My converted image has a white or black background instead of transparency

This happens when converting transparent formats like PNG, GIF, or AVIF to non-transparent formats like JPG or BMP. JPG cannot store transparency - it requires a background color. If you need transparency preserved, use PNG or another alpha-capable format.

The colors in my image look different after conversion

Color shifts can come from color space changes, lost ICC profiles, heavy compression, or reduced color depth. For best color accuracy, prefer PNG, TIFF, or high-quality exports and avoid excessive compression.

Text in my image is blurry after conversion

Blurry text usually means JPG compression was too aggressive or the image was resized. JPG is poor for text-heavy graphics. For screenshots, diagrams, and UI images, use PNG or TIFF instead.

Why is my converted image so large?

Large files usually come from converting a lossy format like JPG into a lossless format like PNG, keeping very high resolution, or using TIFF. For smaller files, reduce dimensions or use JPG, WebP, or AVIF where appropriate.

My image format isn't supported by my device

If your device does not recognize the format: update the software, try another app, or convert to a universal format such as JPG or PNG. Older devices especially struggle with HEIC, AVIF, and WebP.

The animated GIF converted to a static image

Many target formats do not support animation. If you need motion, keep the file as GIF or convert it to a video format such as MP4 or WebM instead.

Why is the image quality worse at the same resolution?

If resolution stayed the same but quality dropped, the issue is usually lossy compression, color reduction, or aggressive quality settings. Use PNG or TIFF for lossless output, or increase the quality setting for lossy formats.

My image has weird artifacts or distortion

Artifacts are usually caused by strong JPG compression, poor resizing, or color banding. Reduce compression, avoid unnecessary scaling, and use PNG for graphics to keep edges clean.

Can I convert an old or damaged image and improve it?

Conversion changes the format, not the underlying quality. A damaged or low-quality image stays damaged or low-quality after conversion. For restoration, use editing tools with sharpening, denoise, or repair features.

Should I convert PNG to JPG for web use?

It depends on the image. Photos usually work well as JPG. Logos, UI graphics, and anything with transparency should usually stay PNG. If supported by your target browsers, WebP is often a better web choice than both.
